Department of Biometry and Environmental System Analysis at the Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources of the University of Freiburg, Germany, invites applications for a PhD position: Tree-insect interaction networks in an international tree diversity experiment
The project: We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled candidate to work in the new project “Tree species diversity effects and the importance of relative timing and species origin for insect-mediated interactions between neighbor plants”. This project will focus on temporal networks of tree-insect and insect-insect interactions in the IDENT network of tree diversity experiments. A unique feature of IDENT is that well-designed experiments are replicated in Europe and North America, with each tree species being planted in both its native and exotic context. The candidate will sample insect communities and develop network analyses to understand how variation in diversity-herbivory relationships can be explained by phenology and how exotic tree species are integrated into native plant-herbivore-enemy networks.
University of Freiburg is an equal opportunities employer. We explicitly encourage women to apply.
What we offer: The project is integrated into an active network of scientific collaborations both locally and globally, which provides a great basis for developing your own scientific profile and network. In Freiburg, the team led by J. Fründ is part of the Biometry and Environmental System Analysis group led by C. Dormann. The University of Freiburg is a renowned institution with an active scientific environment (collaborations across the Faculties of Environment and Natural Resources as well as Biology) and many supporting services. Freiburg is one of the most popular cities in Germany with lots of cultural and recreational opportunities and beautiful surroundings (Black Forest, France and Switzerland are close by). Salary: 60 % TV-L-E13 for 3 years. Start date is as early as possible (ideally February 2018), with field work in Canada starting in May 2018.
How to apply: Please send your application (motivation letter, CV and contact details for 2 references) by e-mail as a single pdf to Jochen Fründ, email@example.com. Deadline for applications is 31 December 2017. Note: candidates attending the conference "Ecology across borders" (BES / GfÖ / NecoV) in Ghent, please contact J. Fründ for an early opportunity to meet there.
