The rediscovery of the Diaphanes olivieri firefly from Sri Lanka after 128 years and the first record of its flightless female

Diaphanes olivieri (Coleoptera: Lampyridae: Lampyrinae) was originally described by Gorham in 1895 from India. There were no subsequent records of this species in Asia. In 2023, male D. olivieri was re-recorded from Rammale Forest Reserve, Southern Sri Lanka, by the firefly research team of Sri Lanka after 128 years of its first record. Interestingly, the research team discovered the female D. olivieri for the first time in the same habitat in the forest.
This research team is comprised of four members: Mr. W. M. C. D. Wijekoon, the principle investigator; Mr. D. R. De Silva; Mr. T. I. Madushanka; and Prof. (Mrs.) H. C. E. Wegirya. The team represents the Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science, University of Ruhuna, Sri Lanka.
The genus Diaphanes Motschulsky fireflies are a diverse group, and they have been recorded from the Afro-tropical, Indo-Malayan, and Palearctic biogeographic realms (Motschulsky, 1853; Olivier, 1907, 1910; McDermott, 1964, 1966). In Sri Lanka, three taxonomically valid Diaphanes (D. lutescens, D. olivieri, and D. bugnioni) have been distributed to date.
The rediscovered male D. olivieri has distinct dorsal and ventral body colours: orange pronotum with translucent pronotal disc, black elytra, and abdominal ventrites except the milky white photic organ in ventrites 6 and 7, orange ventrite 8.
The female of D. olivieri was recorded for the first time when they were associated with males and captured together in copula. Female has distinct characteristics: apterous form; brownish pink body; larger than male; absence of elytral buds and a semi-elliptic pronotum; pygidium weakly bisinuate.
The site where both male and female D. olivieri were found belongs to the Rammale Forest, which is an evergreen forest located in Walasmulla, Southern Province, Sri Lanka. The Rammale Forest is located in the intermediate climatic zone of Sri Lanka. Specimens of D. olivieri were found near a stream where the vegetation was dense. This site is a natural ecosystem that has not yet been altered by human activities.
The rediscovery of D. olivieri with the first record of its female is vital to fill the void of the taxonomic literature and the firefly biodiversity in Sri Lanka and Asia as well.
