25+ PhD and Postdoc positions in the new Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour, Konstanz, Germany

The Center for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour, a newly established excellence cluster, funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG) and located at the University of Konstanz, is looking to recruit a large number of PhD students, Postdocs, Group Leaders and Faculty in 2019, and beyond.

As a collaboration between the University of Konstanz and the co-located Max Planck Institute for Ornithology, with external partners, the Yale Centre for Network Science, Yale University, and the Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Berlin, we aim to create a global hotspot for the integrated study of collective behaviour across a wide range of species and across scales of organisation. We harness substantial expertise across disciplines – combining biology, social psychology, behavioural economics, sociology, physics, and computer science – united in our synergistic and quantitative approaches that involves extensive collection and sophisticated analysis of empirical data. In doing so we will establish a vibrant, productive inter-disciplinary research centre that will conduct research on a wide range of organisms, from insects to humans, to develop a deep and coherent understanding of the principles that underlie collective behaviour across scales of organisation.

We have world-leading research facilities both at the University (which will include a 30 Million Euro research building for collective behaviour, currently in construction, with over 3,000 square meters of research facilities over 8 floors.

The application deadline is 15 January 2019, although later applications may be considered (provided they are sufficiently prior to the interviews

in March - please contact the respective adviser should you not make the Jan 15th deadline). Applicants should read the Application Instructions

before you begin. Applications must include a CV, two letters of reference, and a 1-2 page research statement describing your main research interests

and relevant skillsets, how they developed, and how they relate to the proposed research project. For informal inquiries on positions, please contact the representative advisor on the project. For questions about the application system, visit out FAQs page, or email: carla.avolio@uni-konstanz.de

The Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour will be located at the University of Konstanz, an elite University of Excellence and ranked #1 young university in Germany. The Konstanz research portfolio includes “Collective Behaviour and Ecology" as one of five research foci. The university is committed to Open Science and all members of our Centre must be committed to ethical, transparent and open science. Konstanz has an active and successful dual-career partner placement program and a strong commitment to work-life balance and family-friendly programs for faculty and staff. The campus hosts an exceptional childcare facility with support for childcare during emergencies, conferences, or travel. Konstanz is a vibrant, small city located on the border between Germany and Switzerland, on the shores of the Bodensee (Lake Constance), overlooking the alps, and approximately 50mins from Zurich International Airport.
